For those of you unfamiliar with Eurowings, they are based at Dusseldorf airport in Germany; Eurowings is a subsidiary airline of Lufthansa Airlines, which mainly serves Europe. In 2023, the Lufthansa Group announced an order of up to 60 Airbus A220, with a firm order of 40 jets and options for 20 more. The group also has purchase options for 40 Airbus A320. The Lufthansa Group also has a firm order with Boeing for 40 737 MAX 8 jets, with the option of buying another 60. Until now, we didn’t quite know where the Lufthansa Group was planning to allocate those 40 jets, but we now have an exciting update regarding that as these planes will go to the Lufthansa subsidiary, Eurowings as they will be the one getting those Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets. Let’s dive into this:

Eurowings current fleet.

Eurowings currently has a fleet of around 101 aircraft, which consists of the following:

  • 8 A320 neo
  • 5 A321 neo
  • 32 A319
  • 50 A320
  • 6 A321

It’s interesting to see that the Lufthansa Group has allocated 40 Boeing jets to Eurowings, which was, until now, a sole Airbus operator. It’s exciting to see which routes they will allocate these jets to. Clearly, this is the airline’s future strategy to implement a mixed fleet when the A320 retires. Moving from a single manufacturer to a mixed fleet carrier is always challenging, as maintenance will require additional hubs.

This is what the CEO of Eurowings CEO, Jens Bischof, had to say about this allocation:

“Economic success makes Eurowings attractive for investment. At the same time, we are responsible for reconciling economic and ecological topics. With 40 state-of-the-art aircraft, we are laying the foundations for a successful Eurowings future geared towards ambitious sustainability goals. The largest investment in our company’s history, we are making rapid progress towards low-emission flying – through significantly lower fuel consumption, lower emissions and significantly less noise. The high-cost efficiency of the new jets also enables us to continue to offer Eurowings customers fair and attractive fares. Without such a technological leap, an airline will hardly be able to operate successfully on the market in the 2030s.”

Conclusion.

Eurowings will be getting the Boeing 737 MAX 8 that the Lufthansa Group has allocated to them. The delivery is estimated between 2027 and 2032 as the company is undergoing a huge modernisation. I am excited to see whether they will launch new seats along with the latest aircraft, as we all know how efficient the Lufthansa Group is when it comes to launching new seats….
